WCU Sports History

Women’s Field Hockey Team, 1922-23, photograph

Prior to Title IX, women’s athletics on campus were limited. This photograph luckily preserves the names and images of one of the early and longest-surviving women’s sports programs.

Overview

Athletic teams on campus can be traced back to the nineteenth century when students competed with one another and against teams from are academies and other institutions. Eventually, West Chester University would host a full host of Division II NCAA athletic programs. WCU has won numerous conference and national championships, and many individual athletes have distinguished themselves with All-American honors.

Guiding Questions
  • How have sports and student-athletes been perceived on campus? Have they been the source of controversy in the past? Why?
  • Why have particular sports had more consistent success than others?
  • Have particular sports come and gone in the past? Are there reasons for their fleeting popularity?
  • What was the effect of Title IX on WCU’s sports programs?
