Children's Books at FHG Libraries

The books in the Children's Room are arranged by book type: picture books, juvenile fiction, juvenile non-fiction, board books, big books, and reference books. Everything, except the reference books, can be borrowed for 35 days and may be renewed for an additional 35 days. The reference books are for use in the library and cannot be borrowed.

Locating Books in the Children's Room

  • Picture books are located nearest to the windows. They have the designation jP and are on the shelves in alphabetical order by the author's last name.
  • Juvenile Fiction (chapter books through YA) are located in the middle of the room. They have the designation J and are in alphabetical order by the author's last name.
  • Juvenile Non-fiction are arranged on the shelves near the door closest to the hallway and wrap around to the bookshelves on the opposite side of the room. They are arranged in by subject according to the Dewey Decimal Classification System.
  • Board Books are located the tall bookcase on the wall with windows.
  • Big Books are located against the windows at the far end of the room. These are oversized versions of picture books suitable for early childhood.
  • Book Kits have multiple copies of the same book for early readers. They are located in plastic bags and hang on racks in the room.
