Suni Paz
Suni Paz was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She is a renowned singer, songwriter, and educator known for her contributions to the progressive Latin American music movement, nueva canción, which blends traditional Latin American folk music with contemporary themes of social justice and cultural identity.
One of her most notable albums, Brotando del Silencio (Breaking Out of the Silence), includes songs that address issues like racism, imperialism, and sexism, empowering listeners with a strong sense of cultural identity.
Suni’s relationship with Moses Asch, the founder of Folkways Records, was pivotal in her career. In the late 1970s, Asch commissioned her to create three children’s albums: Alerta, Children Songs for the Playground, and From the Sky of My Childhood. These albums, recorded with cellist Martha Siegel, showcased Suni’s ability to blend educational content with engaging music
Asch’s support helped Suni Paz reach a broader audience and solidify her place in the world of children’s music and educational programming. His belief in her talent and message was instrumental in bringing her work to the forefront of the folk music scene.
