Five Tips for Choosing a Research Topic
- Consult your research assignment instructions and other course materials such as the syllabus, course schedule, and online course site. Consider what topics would be conducive to meeting or exceeding the requirements.
- Communicate with your course instructor to understand their expectations.
- Schedule a research consultation appointment with a librarian early in your research process.
- Maintain mental flexibility and intellectual curiosity regarding your research topic. In most cases, your topic will change during the process of searching for and integrating sources. It's essential to be open to changes, as it enables and supports ground breaking, innovative, research.
- Do background research on your topic to form a better understanding and search terms, as well as narrow your topic.
