A research guide for English Studies from West Chester University Libraries

Introduction to citing sources

Just as the different subdisciplines of English Studies may require using different databases for research, they also may use different citation styles.  Below you will find information on the three major styles used:  MLA, APA, and Chicago.

MLA citation style

MLA (Modern Language Association) style is commonly used in scholarship on both literature and language topics.

Chicago citation style

Chicago style is commonly used in history and art.  Within English Studies, you will commonly see it used in film studies.

There are two different Chicago methods, so make sure you know which one your professor wants!

  • Notes/Bibliography uses footnotes (bottom of page) or endnotes (end of work) instead of in-text citations.
  • Author/Date uses in-text citations like MLA and APA styles.
