A Film Travelogue: Samuel L. Jackson...and not.

This month the IMC has a dedicated DVD display to the actor Samuel L. Jackson, who has starred in over 100 films. Some of the movies featured are well-known favorites, some only feature his voice, and some you didn’t even realize he was in. I picked two movies from our display that were also on my list: Do the Right Thing, and Robocop.

Do the Right Thing is a Spike Lee classic film, but one I hadn’t yet had the chance to watch. It deals with an Italian pizzeria in Brooklyn and its neighbors on the street. After an incident in the pizzeria, racial tensions escalade and hate begins to permeate the street. Samuel L. Jackson plays a radio personality with an office on the street in Brooklyn, which means that his voice is often narrating the events taking place. Spike Lee plays one of the main characters, Mookie, who is a black man working as a pizza delivery boy for Sal, the Italian Pizzeria owner. I loved the characters in this film, and especially the interactions between all the different groups that lived on the street. This is a great film with some superb acting.

The second movie I took home, Robocop, I slowly realized didn’t star Samuel L. Jackson at all. I later found out that Jackson stars in a Robocop remake that came out in 2014 and which the IMC didn’t own. However, I still enjoyed Robocop, and was very impressed with their special effects, especially since the movie came out in the late ‘80s. If you aren’t familiar with the story, the film portrays the life of a cop, Alex Murphy, who is transformed into cyborg cop, and helps to eradicate crime throughout the city of Detroit. A solid action film, I would recommend watching it if you haven’t yet had the chance.

The Samuel L. Jackson display will be up for a couple more weeks, so come check something out! If you are interested in starting your own film travelogue journey, you can do so here: https://letterboxd.com/peterstanley/list/1001-movies-you-must-see-before-you-die/.
