A Film Travelogue: Staff Favorites

by Ainsley Hume on 2018-05-06T16:10:25-04:00 | 0 Comments

This month we featured our Staff Picks DVD display, so I decided to take this opportunity to pull some of our coworkers’ favorite movies that also happened to be on my list! Three movies that I watched were: Babe [IMC DVD 636.407 B113 2003], Princess Mononoke [IMC DVD 741.58 P957 2000], and Pulp Fiction [IMC DVD 345.03 P982 1994?].

All three of these movies are classics in their own right and all deserve to be seen at least once. I grew up with the movie Gordy as my pig childhood classic, but I know I would have loved Babe just as much if I had seen it back then. Babe is a movie about a pig that gets taken to a farm and is trying to find his way among many other types of animals. He gets adopted by Fly, a border collie, and soon the farmer decides to train him to be a herder for the sheep. This movie is very heartwarming, and a great break from some more serious films.

My second film was Princess Mononoke, a film by Studio Ghibli. I loved this movie, and am always impressed when animated films are able to delve so deeply into serious issues that we are facing today. The characters especially were the most interesting, because there wasn’t truly (to my mind) a “bad guy”. There were characters working against the forest, but they were trying to help others by doing so. If you haven’t had the chance to watch this movie yet, I would highly recommend it.

My last film was Pulp Fiction (Yes, yes, I know it’s a classic). This was an interesting movie, especially because of the episodic feel. I ended up really enjoying it, although I’m not a huge Quentin Tarantino fan. I can see why this film has gained such a cult classic following since its release—Tarantino does a wonderful job with his dialogue.

Staff Picks has now ended, so the IMC’s featured DVD display is now Mental Health Awareness. Come check it out (and a movie!) before the semester is done. And don’t forget to follow along on your own film
